Very cool chunk of figures, I like their common color scheme while still retaining some individuality with beard differentiation. Cool shields too!

Thank you! With having to replace/supplement my existing Essex human forces with the new Ral Partha figures, I have to keep to similar color schemes. The figures were fun to paint!

Over on Facebook, the "Old School Miniatures" group is having a painting challenging using Max Mentalus. I'd never painted old Max before but apparently he's very beloved. I've found a neat, Christmas related inspiration to paint the first Max (we got 2) and here's some WIP.

This is a sneak peak of the final "look" - when I get more done of the front, I'll do the big reveal. It's not Gandalf, it's Christmas related.

Still plugging away at finishing the Avalon Axemen and my terrain for GaryCon. The Axemen are forcing me to learn how to draw shield designs free-hand, as I have a "Dragon segreant sinister argent" to paint. On deck is the Avalon Swordsmen regiment.

Part of me really wanted to see his guy finished off in the black robes...

The remaining six of my Avalon Axemen. Ready to be based.

This was the first time I'd ever attempted a free-hand shield design like the ones with the heraldic dragon. At tabletop distance, I'm very happy with the results. I'm surprised it went as well as it did!

And those stripes... ugh!

Next up - the Avalon Swordsmen unit! And continuing with the Max Mentalus painting challenge. (You might see one in dark robes, DarkPoet... Max Krampus? :evil grin:)

I was actually inspired to pick up that wizard yesterday while I was at the factory! Not to get it based and painted. Gonna be fun to see how it turns out versus yours

That's wonderful! I can't wait to see how yours turns out as well.

Here's my WIP on St. Max-Nicholas. I'm getting inspiration from some Victorian-age pictures of St. Nicholas. (3rd image)

I really dig the color palette you chose. Mine's been done a while now. I think I'll post it up on the Facebook group soon.

I can't wait to see it.

Thanks! I'm dreading painting the gold trim on this bad boy, considering all the wrinkles.

This week has been taken up primarily with prepping the house for sale! So that has cut into mini painting time. I'm also working on the terrain for the GaryCon/Little Wars games, so that also reduces the time with brush in hand. Still, getting some things moving forward.

The Two Towers/City Gates piece is slowly being assembled. I'm just to the point of creating the tops and integrating the "bridge" with the towers.

Once I finish this batch of swordsmen, it's on to the last six swordsmen, where I'll be painting some interesting heraldry onto the shields. Getting brave!

@DarkPoet - I'm probably paying a bit more because I'm buying the kits/blocks from someone who casts them already. I suspect that going forward, once I'm done with the rush to get all this done in 3 months, I'll buy my own molds and cast my own. The molds are ~$35 each. They can get many casts, from what I understand.

Right now, I've probably spent ~$100 for this build, and $50 for the ruined tower. It's been great fun putting them together. That is for someone to do the casting though. I'd probably have spent less if I did it myself... but the time...

Yea... I've noticed. It's totally addictive to put those damn things together, it's like grown-up Legos!

Just got my copy of this wizard mounted to a base and got pumice applied tonight (along with some other models while I was at it) so I should be able to get him painted soon!

These first six are ready to be based! I've gotten brave about free-hand heraldry on my shields as well...

These next six though, pushed me to about the limit of my ability in drawing and free-hand work. They look a little glossy as they are going through varnishing. They are waiting the 24 hours for their matte varnish. Then on to basing!

And with that, another unit is just about complete! One unit of humans to go for GaryCon and I'm finished with the figures for that event: the Dismounted Foot Knights.

What's on my bench this week. After a huge push to get all the humans done, they are almost finished! They're going through final varnishing, then basing. That's them in the background. Old Max Mentalus as Saint Nicholas is also finished with painting, and going through varnishing and basing.

Next up - more elves! I'm working on a Sea Elven hero, a Land Elf mage and a Kraken cavalry. I've been looking forward to painting this sucker, so here he comes. I'll eventually get the other 2 painted...

A lot going on, taking care of an ill wife, still working on the house, and still painting. I didn't make as much progress this weekend as I hoped, but I'm still trucking along. I'm done with all the painting for GaryCon, but I have 50-odd elves to finish in under 12 weeks! So we'll see...

First up, here's the almost finished Kracken Cavalry. (sorry for the crappy shots, my photos are overexposing now! I have to dial that back a bit)

I'm not 100% sure I'm happy with the Kracken itself. I tried a dry brush/wash approach and ... well... just not satisfied, but I'm putting it into play as-is. I am VERY happy with the freehand snake shield! I credit the wife for telling me to leave it black, so I did. I like it.
