WIP for 11-422 Elves from AD&D was created by Moonglum
So years ago, I got back into painting and when I did, I received a catalogue from Ral Partha. It was their 1997 catalogue, which was full of some really cool stuff as always but in the last pages they were showing off what was to come in the near future. I saw the elves and thought they would be nice to have some day, but it was literally many, many years later until I snagged a set. Here's a shot of that catalogue.

And now, little by little the action begins. Base colors for their skin tones. I'm taking all of these with my iPhone, which doesn't always give the greatest pictures, and I'm taking photos kind of sporadically, so they don't show step by step progress, just as I remember to take pictures. Also, there are four of them.

I think I'm going to do the female archer as a wood elf, the male archer as an "elf" elf (high elf maybe), the one with the spear is a sea elf, and the one getting ready to stab somebody a drow.

And now starting to work more on their clothing, I wanted foresty colors for the chick, so starting with green, not so certain about the yellow, but almost never repent and repaint, and then for more high elfy colors, blues, whites and greys for the other archer.

I find it very interesting how your painting process appears to be the exact opposite of my own. You start with the skin tones where as I do the rest of the piece before touching flesh tones.

Yeah, I always work on the skin first, and work my way out.

and here's what I got done last night again, not too much more, but got the leather on her arrow case (can't remember what it's really called)

I believe quiver is the term you were looking for, and they are looking really great! Can't wait to see all 4 completed! I plan to eventually do some Dark Elves and I'll likely be doing a version of Drow but with more grey skin I think. Haven't decided since that project is way down the road right now.

I do the flesh, eyes and hair first myself. I then tend to do inside to outside - that's just a habit and I sometimes break it.

Where I vary from that is if they have metal armor. Then I dry brush, paint the armor first, then paint black over the non-armor parts to remove the dry brushing splatter/excess, then do flesh.

PS. Just ordered my first Foundry paint triad - flesh. My craft paints flesh is old, and it's pretty hard to work with. I've come to really like the 2 or 3 color highlight Foundry method, so I'll see if the paints are worth it. I've been using craft paints for 10 years, so this is a big change for me. :D

and here they are with painted metal. The bow is painted on the chick and the bow has been started on the male archer.

and here is what I've done tonight, a little bit more of finishing touches on the lady elf, and I got the bow done on the male. I painted their bases black, and they are more or less now finished, waiting to be sealed and then based. As always, I struggle with my NMM metal, but I've found it's an eternal learning process. I focused on these two, now I've got to work on the drow and sea elf. Working on the sea elf skin tones has kind of inspired me to want to do another sea elf project, which I may start soon.

So after the two elven archers were painted, I started getting their bases ready. Superglued them to a base and put green putty all around to smooth tings out

and then I'm continuing to work on the Drow

and the sea elf, and I'm really starting to get into this sea elf color scheme.

So after finishing the two archers, I worked on this guy all day yesterday and finished him more or less. I tried to maintain an "aquatic" color scheme, with a limited color scheme. Tomorrow I'll get his base done, which will be all corn meal, and then probably "sand" color. After that I'll have to keep working on the drow.
